Artist Spotlight: Ranee Henderson

Vigil Vigilance Vigilante
Oil on canvas
24" x 36"
2020

“Vigil, Vigilance, Vigilante: It isn’t the title of this painting, but maybe the theme of it and others to come? I’ve been stuck on the progression and regression of those three words (and their alignment with change) for quite a while, but the thought of dissecting them came with all of the Covid-19 time—

A feather/fletching is the vigil: a leader, even though the rest run in front of it.
A reed/shaft is the body, vigilance: a tip-of-the-toes state, a still point planted in anticipation.
An arrowhead/point is the vigilante: the well-honed brute. The point.
A doorstop is stoppage, for either negativity, or positivity. It is backwards pressure.
A door is the opposite of a doorstop.
Green feet are the thems, or theys, that have always treated me and mine like peanuts.”
