Dear Emily,

by Marisa Siegel

What makes you
complicated,
inscrutable dust
piled in the corner.

Damned dream
slips like water
over rock.

I won’t compromise
the light —

afternoon sings
like a bird.

Damned bird
won’t know
I’m gone.

Promise collects
like rainwater
in the gutter,

builds cobwebs
in the eaves.

Damned sun
makes it shine
like gold.
